Savage Love: Chapter 1 (Excerpt)

The parking lot was crowded as Kelly Walker pulled her car into one of the few remaining spaces. She looked around, taking in the other vehicles finally spotting the one she searched for. As she stepped from her vehicle, the heat of the night hit her in the face. When normally a jacket would be needed in October, this year they had yet to hit below seventy.
Halloween night and it was over eight-five degrees outside. Although it did make finding a sexy costume easier, helping to set her plan in motion. Wearing a short, tight black skirt, knee-high, black leather boots, a skimpy, red tank top, and a headband with horns, she should raise some eyebrows with the little devil costume. Hopefully, getting the attention of the one she wanted.
A large man wearing black jeans and a black sleeveless shirt opened the front door. By his seductive smile and wink of approval, Kelly felt pretty good going into the bar. The music and smoke hit her all at once and she struggled not to cough as the smoke soaked into her pores. The lights were low, but she could see well enough.
Walking from the door, she made a slow sweep of the room. She smiled as heads turned towards her, but she made it completely around the room without stopping. She knew exactly where he sat and that he was accompanied by four of his men. She was working out the best way to approach him, when a hand grabbed her upper arm and pulled her back against a hard chest.
Kelly stilled as an arm wrapped around her waist, and she felt breath against her neck.
"I told you never to come here." The voice next to her ear was low, husky.
Kelly relaxed in the embrace, immediately recognising the voice of the undercover agent, Alex Gray, who was working her sister’s case. "Well, I must have forgotten," she said in her sexiest southern drawl.
She was rewarded with a growl before being dragged in a storage room and slammed against the door.
"This isn’t a game," he told her as he crushed her harder into the door.
Kelly found herself distracted by the strength of the body that covered hers. He held her arms over her head and leaned against her so she could feel every inch of his muscular body against her softer flesh. Her body flushed and she felt her arousal as she shifted against him. She had never responded like this to a man before meeting Alex. But since she had, all she could ever think about was tearing off his clothes.
Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she pushed against him. "Okay, let me go, Alex."
She looked up in his eyes. He smiled but didn’t release her. "What are you doing here Kelly?"
Sighing, Kelly slumped against the door. "It’s been a year. A year today. I just wanted to see him."
Alex nodded his head, and she saw sympathy in his expression. "I’m sorry but you can’t be here." He released her and stepped back.
The loss of his body heat had Kelly wrapping her arms around herself. "I’m not leaving. I want to talk to him."
"No." Alex shook his head and crossed his arms over his chest.
Kelly took a step towards him, resting her hands on her hips. "You’re not my boss. I can talk to who I want to."
He just smiled smugly at her.
"What are you going to do, Alex? Arrest me?" she taunted. "Don’t you think that would ruin your cover?"
The smile never left his face. "I don’t have to arrest you. All I have to do is have you thrown out of the bar, put in a cab and sent home."
She knew he would do it. "Please, Alex. I just wanted to talk to him."
"No."
Frustrated, Kelly struck out a hand but he caught it.
"Careful there," he warned and yanked her to him. Kelly tilted her head back to look him in the face. His grey eyes cut into hers as his lips thinned.
"I won’t let you blow my cover. I won’t let you ruin a two-year investigation. He’s killed more than just your sister. I have been after him longer than what you’ve been involved. And most of all I won’t let you get yourself hurt or killed."
Kelly’s gaze followed as his lips moved and she licked her own, wondering what his would taste like. She looked into his eyes and saw the struggle there. He was fighting the attraction, just like she was. But she was tired of fighting it.
Kelly lifted onto her toes and pressed her mouth against his. He stiffened but didn’t move. She traced his lips with her tongue and bit down on the lower.
Alex finally opened to her with a groan. As she kissed him again, his hands found their way to her hair, and the soft kiss she started turned into a desperately brutal kiss of passion. He lifted her off her feet, and she wrapped her legs around his narrow waist. The jean material of his pants rubbed roughly against the damp silk material of her panties.
He moaned into her mouth, and she tightened her legs around him, needing to relieve the pressure between her thighs.
A knock on the door made them jump. Alex let her down his body slowly before moving and turning away. "Yeah?"
"Hey, Alex, we’re starting to get busy. Need you at the bar." A male voice came through the door.
"Be right there," Alex said before turning back to Kelly. He picked up her headband that had fallen to the floor and handed it to her. "One drink, Kelly. You will not talk to him and then you will be on your way."
Kelly nodded, her face still flushed and her skin still heated. Alex opened the door and, with his hand wrapped around her wrist, pulled her towards the bar.
Alex couldn’t believe she had shown up at the bar. He knew she was getting restless, and the anniversary of her sister’s murder didn’t help, but he had specifically told her to stay away from here.
Setting a Crown and Coke in front of her, he watched her blush before taking a drink. Things had gone a little too far in the storage room, but damn she’d tasted good. Smelled good and felt even better. He’d fought it for so long and to finally have her in his arms had felt like heaven. But he couldn’t do it. She didn’t belong in his world.
Alex looked over to the man in the back of the bar. Craig Lambert—local drug dealer, murderer, and vampire. Kelly would never believe him if he told her what Craig really was. Hell, he could probably show her, and she still wouldn’t believe. No, she didn’t belong in this world, and he needed to get rid of her.
He exchanged a look with his partner, Marcus, who nodded. He would help keep an eye on Kelly if Alex needed him to. Marcus was also aware of the attraction between the two of them. Every time they had spoken with Kelly about the case, Marcus would make sure to comment on just how pretty Kelly was, receiving the desired reaction from Alex.
The two men had been friends for a very long time. Alex wasn’t able to hide his feelings for Kelly from him, and Marcus loved the fact that he tried.
When Kelly stood, he sighed in relief that she was leaving.
"I’ll call you tomorrow, Kelly, I promise," he told her as he covered her hand with his on the cold, worn wood of the bar.
Her eyes met his and he could see the pain.
"It’s almost over," Alex assured her.
Her gaze darted to the back of the room before meeting his again. "Okay, Alex."
She pulled her hand away, turned and left the bar. Alex watched her the entire time, his body reacting. He adjusted the bulge in his jeans. His attention was then drawn to the empty table in the back. Where had they gone?
